Prenatal screening

During your pregnancy you can have tests to see whether there are signs that your baby has a congenital condition — a chromosomal abnormality or a physical abnormality. This is called prenatal screening. Taking part is always your own choice.

Two types of test

  • NIPT – a blood test that looks for chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.
  • The 13-week scan and the 20-week scan – scans that check whether your baby is developing well physically. (The 13-week scan is offered within a national scientific study.)

Counselling appointment

Would you like to know more about these tests? Then we will arrange a counselling appointment together. We calmly explain what the tests involve, so you can make a choice that suits you.

You decide for yourself whether to take part

The NIPT, the 13-week scan and the 20-week scan are not mandatory. You decide for yourself whether you want to have one or more of these tests.

More information

You can find reliable, up-to-date information, leaflets, videos and a preparatory questionnaire on the official government website about prenatal screening.
